Registering for Classes
In order to register for classes, you need to meet with your advisor. Your advisor will release you for registration and help you figure out what classes you need to take for the upcoming semester. Once you have been released for registration, you will receive a specific date and time for when your registration window opens.
The classes you take should be based on your intended academic plan you determined with your advisor during your advising meetings based on your DegreeWorks. What classes you take depends on your intended major, your semester classification, and the courses you still need in order to graduate or to enter a major.
A registration hold prevents a student from registering for classes for the upcoming semester. Registration holds can be placed on a student for various reasons by Financial Aid and Scholarships, the Student Health Center, or other authorized individuals. A registration hold can only be removed by the party placing the hold. Your academic advisor can assist you in determining the source of the hold and directing you to the appropriate party to have it removed. To have your best selection of courses, you should check for holds in your Banner account before you register for classes.
Prerequisites are requirements that must be met prior to taking a course. Prerequisites can include: successful completion of a designated course in a sequence, ACT/SAT score, and/or student classification.
Course / Majors / Credits
DegreeWorks is an online program that compares your academic record to major requirements as found in the MSU Catalog.
This will allow you to see what courses you have left to complete a degree. You can do a "what if" analysis to see how the courses you have taken fit into different majors. DegreeWorks is accessed through the Banner tab of your myState portal under the Academic Records column.
Check your DegreeWorks. If you want to explore another major, you can run a "What if" report in DegreeWorks to compare your transcript to the major course of study. You can also meet with a departmental advisor in your intended major.
The MSU Catalog has a complete list of courses and course descriptions. For courses that are a part of your program of study, their course descriptions can be found on your DegreeWorks.
Credit by examination information can be found in the MSU Catalog.
Make sure you send all of your transcripts to MSU. Dual Enrollment courses from high school should be sent from institution from which they were taken.
To know if your courses will apply to your major, contact your advisor. To check if the courses transfers to MSU, check the Transfer Course Articulation tool.
Yes! It is highly recommended you submit your ACT/SAT scores for appropriate course placement.
Academic Policies
The Academic/Grade Forgiveness Policy may be used to remove a maximum of 9 total credit hours of undergraduate D or F course grades from the computation of your MSU GPA. All courses for which a grade has been assigned will remain on the transcript. However, the notation will appear that the work is not included in your MSU GPA. Be sure to talk to your advisor before you apply academic/grade forgiveness. Read the complete policy here.
When you are ready to change or declare a major, you will need to make an appointment with your advisor, who will verify your GPA and course requirements. After you talk to your advisor, you will complete the Change of Major eForm, which can be found under eForms on your myState homepage. Your eForm will be reviewed and will either be approved/declined based on program requirements.

Some departments may also require the approval of their respective deans. Courses may be dropped with a drop/add form through the 36th day of classes (regular terms) with advisor approval.
Some departments may also require the approval of the dean. Students using this option will have a “W” displayed on their transcript for the courses(s). Keep in mind that dropping below 12 hours can have a negative impact on financial aid, housing, health insurance, etc. Summer term deadlines to add and/or drop are shorter because these terms are condensed. Any course that is added or dropped will be assessed a $50 fee to your account.
Before withdrawing from your classes, contact your advisor. To withdraw from the term, you must submit a Withdrawal Request. To access the request, go to Banner in myState.

A first semester freshman with a MSU GPA below 2.0 will be monitored by the Center for Student Success and/or required to take an academic support course.
