Add, Change, Declare a Major

Thinking About Change Your Major?

Many students discover new interests, career goals, or opportunities during their time at Mississippi State and decide that they may need to change their major. Before making a change, take time to explore your options and talk with the people who can help you make an informed decision.

Steps to Changing Your Major

Step 1: Explore Your Options

If you're considering a different academic path, start by learning more about the majors we have available. The Major Maps website provides information about degree programs, coursework, career opportunities, and academic colleges. Next, take a look at the undergraduate catalog to view more information about your program(s) of interest. Lastly, head to Degree Works and run a "What-If" audit. The What-If audit reads just like the Academic audit for your current major, but you can choose from any of the majors offered to see what is required for that program of study.

Questions to consider:

  • What subjects do I enjoy most?
  • What careers am I interested in?
  • What classes have I enjoyed or performed well in?
  • What skills do I want to develop during college?

Step 2: Talk With Your Advisor

Before changing majors, schedule a meeting with your current academic advisor. Your advisor can help you:

  • Understand how a major change may impact your degree progress
  • Review completed coursework and how it may apply to a new program
  • Explore alternative majors, minors, or academic pathways
  • Connect you with faculty or advisors in your area of interest

A quick conversation with your advisor can help you make a more informed decision and avoid unexpected surprises later. Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor before submitting a major change request.

Step 3: Submit Your Major Change

Once you have explored your options and discussed the decision with your advisor, you can complete the major change process through the university's official procedures.

Keep in mind:

  • Some majors have admission requirements or capacity limits.
  • Certain programs may require a minimum GPA, application process, audition, portfolio review, or other departmental approval.
  • Processing times may vary by college or department.

Change, Add or Declare Your Major

Will changing my major delay graduation?

It depends on how many credits you have completed and how different the new program is from your current degree. Your advisor can help you understand the potential impact on your graduation timeline.

Can I change my major more than once?

Yes. However, changing majors multiple times may affect degree progress, financial aid eligibility, or graduation plans. Be sure to discuss your options with an advisor before making a decision.
